The future is Green and White
Im usually a firm member of the 'lets not make a big deal out of it - just rise above them' brigade.
But this feels different. This is huge. This is what we've seen happening for year under Murray (and obviously hoped for).
They are going down the Leeds route. They no longer own the rights to their own stadium, which their accounts value 6 times more than its actual valuation. They spent 9 million pounds on players in a summer where even top clubs havent been throwing big bucks around. Their signing have been principly on stikers, of which they now have 8 (Miller, Velicka, Lafferty, Boyd, Novo, McCulloch, Cousin, Darchville) and they only play a formation with one up front. They expected to have sold Cousin and brought in Davis (at a profit) - None of this has happened. They regularly play with 4 Centre halfs along the back line, two defenders in midfield. They are in debt and MUST have gambled their transfer kitty on at least making the uefa cup.
On the flip side - we have just signed a player from Barcelona for pennys
Meaning the past four seasons have seen us buying a player every season from Europes elite.
2005/06 - Roy Keane (MAN UTD)
2006/07 - Tommy Gravesen (REAL MADRID)
2007/08 - Massimo Donati (AC MILAN)
2008/09 - Crossas (BARCELONA)
Throw a Chelsea, Seville, and PSV in there and you see our status and market position we hold (finances permitting).
With Samaras at a snip (1.2 million) - and next to nothing for McCourt (what looks to be a cracking squad player) - we seem to have wasted no money and still be in a better position. Boruc, McGeady, McDonald not only on long term contracts but openly willing to stay. We are straight through to the group stages of Champions League and have the complete Scottish section of the TV money.
Things couldn’t be more polarised.
I remember how long it took me to get over losing the league on the last day then the Artmedia debacle - it was a long and unenjoyable time footballwise(copyright Charlie Nicholas).
It is different - they know it and we know it. Its almost pointless 'rising above it'. We are above it. The level of fun we decide to poke at them is wholly our perogative.
The Future's bright, the future's green and white.
